When most little girls were dressing their Barbie Dolls, I was building them houses--no lie, I couldn't make up this stuff! Who would have thought that the twists and turns of a life would lead me right back to my first passion?
I was born in Pensacola, Florida (yep, Navy brat) and raised in Virginia Beach, Virginia (no, really!). Since I had not yet learned to appreciate good weather, I wanted to go as far away from home as possible for college. OK, so I only got to western Pennsylvania. But what a great way to spend four years--Waynesburg College (which has now grown up and become Waynesburg University). Graduating in 1973 was a really bad idea, thanks to the job market, so I went back to school to get a Masters. Two amazing years at West Virginia University turned me into a Mountaineer, but the arch rivalry with the University of Pittsburgh did not stop me from working in Pittsburgh for Ernst & Ernst as an auditor. My next career move took me to Columbus, Ohio, where I worked as an Internal Auditor for Battelle Memorial Institute, and I donned scarlet and gray and became a loyal Buckeye fan (including Woody Hayes).
Somewhere along in here, a friend referred me to Western Electric, which was looking to hire women into their management trainee program (you had to love the 70's). A "temporary" transfer to the Merrimack Valley Works in North Andover, Massachusetts somehow turned into 22 years, including a marriage, a couple of kids, and becoming a Girl Scout Leader (for 8 years), becoming a Soccer Mom (life-long commitment) and a golf addict (ditto). So at the ripe old age of 50, I retired from Ma Bell alias Lucent Technologies.
Wondering what to do next professionally, I had an idea: "I think I will teach high school math. What a great idea!" Hum. It didn't take the entire five years of teaching to realize that maybe that was not one of my better ideas. But I did learn a lot while I was teaching: you never know when you will need to use the quadratic equation...and now I will probably never forget it again! And I actually caught myself using the Pythagorean Theorem for a project in the back yard--how nerdy can a person get...
So in 2007, I joined the very best real estate company, Prudential Verani! What a perfect profession in which to combine years of different job skills and talents to the benefit of my clients. My Accounting and Financial Planning background are valuable assets when helping clients to deal with banks and mortgage companies (did I mention I audited banks?), and understand HUD statements and other closing documents; my Marketing and Sales background is invaluable when I market and sell your home; my Teaching background helps me to make sure that my clients really understand the entire real estate process and clarify any confusing points; and my Product Management and Project Management background assure that I keep the entire process in line, on time, and that I make sure that the transaction goes smoothly from beginning to end.
Besides, I just love houses and different types of architecture. For as long as I can remember, I have driven through neighborhoods thinking, "I'd love to see that house!" Now I can do just that. How cool is that!
So that's a little bit about me (did I mention I love golf?). I would love to hear from you; please contact me on 603-490-3978 or e-mail on robin.chater@verani.com
